1. Mother’s Day is on 19th March in the UK this year.

Mother’s Day, in the UK, falls on different days each year.

It always falls on the fourth Sunday of Lent.

2. It is also known as Mothering Sunday.

Mother’s Day is also known as Mothering Sunday in the UK.

In fact, it was originally known as this.

3. It is a day where we celebrate our Mums!

Mums do a lot for us and are always working really hard.

Mother’s Day is a day where we celebrate them and say thanks!

On this day Mothers often receive flowers, presents or maybe you just want to spend time together.

4. A lady called Anne Jarvis came up with Mother’s Day in the USA.

In the USA, Mother’s Day is different from ours (in the UK it originates from Mothering Sunday) and is celebrated in a completely different month!

It all started in 1908.

Anne Jarvis was the American who came up with the idea!

She wanted to remember her Mother as she had sadly passed away and asked her friends to wear white carnations to church.

Mother’s Day is celebrated on a different day to the UK.

In America it falls on the second Sunday of May.

In 2021 it is on 9th May.

6. Mothers Day has been around in the UK since the 16th Century.

Mothering Sunday has been around since the 16th Century. Back then it was more of a religious festival rather than to do with thanking Mothers.

However, it started up again in 1914 due to someone called Constance Penswick-Smith.

She heard what Anne Jarvis had done in America and it inspired her to bring back Mothering Sunday.

7. Simnel is a kind of cake which would be made on this day.

Simnel cake is associated with Mother’s Day.

During the early days of Mothering Sunday, children would take their Mothers a simnel cake that they had made.

A simnel cake is a type of fruit cake topped with marzipan.

8. Originally on Mothering Sunday people would go to their ‘mother churches’.

In the 16th Century when Mothering Sunday was more of a religious festival, people would visit their ‘mother’ church.

This meant that everyone would go back to the church nearest their childhood home.

Here they would also have family reunions!

9. Popular gifts include flowers, chocolates and of course, a card!

No matter how you show your Mum that you appreciate her, we are sure she will love it!
